Indiana native and Nashville-based songwriter Stephen Wilson Jr. is opening a new chapter in his career with the release of his latest single, “Gary,” out now via Big Loud Records. (listen above) The song made its debut last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where Wilson delivered a gritty, slow-building performance showcasing his blend of Middle America storytelling and grunge-leaning rock influences.
Wilson is also marking a major milestone tonight at the CMA Awards, where he is nominated for New Artist of the Year. He’ll take the stage twice — once for his emotional version of “Stand By Me,” which has already earned more than 20 million global streams, and again alongside fellow nominee Shaboozey for a collaboration on “Took A Walk” from the 2025 film The Long Walk.
Reflecting on the inspiration behind “Gary,” Wilson shares his appreciation for the everyday American workers who keep communities running:
“Where I come from, the Garys get it done,” he says. “When your septic tank blows, I do not believe AI will show, but I believe a guy will. And there’s a good chance his name’s gonna be Gary.”
The new release comes on the heels of a standout year that included the deluxe edition of his debut double album søn of dad, the Blankets EP of ’90s and 2000s rock covers, an NFL Draft National Anthem performance, a collaboration with Noah Cyrus, and tour dates with Eric Church, HARDY, and festival appearances including Newport Folk.
Wilson will close 2025 with two sold-out headlining shows at the Ryman Auditorium on November 23 and 24.
