When it comes to food, Independence Day is number one for barbecues, picnics, beer, and all the hot dogs you can eat! It’s traditional to spend the whole day outside on the 4th just enjoying the day with family and friends anxiously awaiting to see the fireworks. Because we have centered all our activities outside on this day, our meals are also traditionally outside as well.

With the help of Christopher Griffiths, we fired up the American Badass Grill and are pumped to share a few Fourth of July Grilling Ideas! What better way to celebrate America’s Independence Day than with some grilled Conecuh sausage, steaks, chicken, and zucchini topped off with apple butter?!

When it comes to food for a Fourth of July BBQ all you need to do is keep it simple and provide foods that are normally served at BBQ’s. Don’t worry about BBQing something that everybody is going to eat because most people will eat your classic BBQ foods, even kids.

How ironic is it that National Hot Dog month and July 4th go hand in hand. Yep…. July 4th is a well known day for grilling and although it’s popular to grill all kinds of meat, it’s still a fact that hot dogs are the #1 choice alongside other food favorites. We order our homemade kraut dogs, hotdogs and cheese dogs from Buntings Cedar Market in Cedar, MI.

So what are you waiting for, get your party started with these Fourth of July Grilling Ideas!

If you haven’t already befriended dry rubs, it’s time. They add depth of flavor to your favorite grilled foods and the right combination of spices can give your meal a Southern kick. Try them with beef, fish, chicken breasts, and vegetables. I highly recommend Southern Flavor, just sprinkle and cook.

Grilled BBQ Conecuh Sausage-

Cut into 6 to 8 inch links and slice down the middle
Toss them on the grill, medium to slow heat, turning often to brown all sides.
Right before they are ready, slather on some of your favorite barbecue sauce.

Spiced Grilled Chicken-
Full of flavor from an easy spice rub, moist, and done in less than 20 minutes!

Ingredients
chicken breasts
1 teaspoon of garlic salt
1 teaspoon of onion powder
1 teaspoon of F.A. Nino’s citrus dry rub, southern flavor, or Tony Chachere’s
½ teaspoon of sea salt
¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper
2 tablespoon of olive oil
Preheat grill to medium high heat.
In a small bowl, mix seasonings and olive oil until combined.
Rub mixture over both sides of the chicken.
Place chicken on grill and grill each side for 4-6 minutes depending on thickness. You just want to make sure there is no pink in the middle.
Serve

Dry-rubbed Ribeye-
1 tablespoons salt*
1 teaspoon pulverized crushed red pepper
3 tablespoons of Southern Flavor Charbroil Seasoning
1 teaspoon garlic powder
rib-eye steaks
Extra-virgin olive oil

Combine all of the dry ingredients in a bowl. Southern Flavor isn’t a marinade that requires hours of attention. Use your fingers to make sure that all of the ingredients are evenly distributed. Rub the outside of each steak generously with the rub.

Preheat a gas or charcoal grill.  Lightly oil the steaks. Place the steaks on a very hot grill to put a char on both sides of the steak. When both sides of the steak have become well charred move the steak to a cooler part of the grill to continue cooking for 6 to 7 minutes per side for medium rare. Remove the steak from the grill and let rest in a warm spot for 7 to 8 minutes. Serve immediately.

American Badass Grilled Corn: This is the easiest basic recipe on how to grill corn, but it tastes amazing.
Fresh Corn on the cob (you could use frozen, but fresh is so cheap right now)
Olive oil
Salt, pepper, Garlic salt (or any seasonings you would like)
Butter for after grilling
Foil
Clean the cobs of corn of the husks.
Lay each cob on the foil.
Drizzle with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper and garlic salt.
Roll up in the foil. Do this until all of the corn is covered in foil.
Place on the American Badass grill on about medium heat for 20 minutes turning occasionally.
Make sure you are careful when unwrapping – these are hot!
Serve with the butter!

Grilled Mushroom Skewer: This easy marinated mushroom recipe is perfect for the grill. I used baby portobello mushrooms but this recipe does work with the regular mushrooms too.

16 oz (1 lb) Baby Portabello Mushrooms (crimini or button work too)

10 (10-inch)  skewers

For the marinade:

1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup lemon juice
small handful of parsley
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1-2 garlic cloves
1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar

If using wood skewers place into a baking dish and cover with water. It’s important to soak the skewers for at least 15 minutes (more is better) or they will burn too quickly on the grill.
Place all of the marinade ingredients in a food processor and pulse several times until marinade is nearly smooth.
Rinse your mushrooms and pat dry.
Place the mushrooms into a large gallon-size ziploc bag, or a medium bowl and pour in the marinade. Shake the bag until all of the mushrooms are evenly coated in marinade. Refrigerate and marinate for 30-45 minutes.
Skewer the mushrooms snugly onto the skewers.
Place the skewered mushrooms on the hot American Badass Grill for about 3 minutes per side, making sure the mushrooms do not burn to the grill. The mushrooms are done when they are soft. Remove from the grill. Cover with foil to keep them warm until ready to serve.

Grilled Zucchini with Sea Salt and Apple Butter-
1/2 cup sea salt
1/4 cup apple butter
3 medium zucchini, ends trimmed, sliced lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick planks
Olive oil, for brushing

Brush the zucchini planks on both sides with olive oil. Sprinkle with sea salt and spread on apple butter on both sides  until well coated. Transfer the zucchini to the grill over medium heat and cook until tender, about 5 minutes, flipping halfway through. Remove the zucchini and serve.

Grilled Zucchini and Squash Foil Pack-

Ingredients

2 zucchini, halved lengthwise and cut in 1/4 inch slices
1 summer squash, thinly sliced
3/4 cup butter
1 tablespoon salt
2 tablespoons ground black pepper
2 tablespoons garlic powder
Preheat grill for medium-high heat.
Place the zucchini, and squash on a large sheet of aluminum foil, and dot with butter. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Seal vegetables in the foil.
Place the foil pack on the preheated grill, and cook 20 minutes, until vegetables are tender.

Did you know that pickles are ate more on July 4th than any other time of the year? Yep! They are ate right out of the jar, put on top of hot dogs as relish, and sliced dills are put inside hamburgers. Since July 4th is basically a picnic day it means pickles all the way!
