Tim McGraw: The Key Is Finding Good Songs

Tim McGraw has said in the past that he prefers recording ballads over uptempo songs because he doesn’t often find uptempo songs he likes, but so far, the new music he’s previewed from his upcoming album, including his current single, “Truck Yeah” and “Mexicoma,” are both uptempo. “The key is finding good ones,” Tim explains. And for him good doesn’t necessarily mean deep or life-changing. “There’s always a place for ones that don’t say a whole lot that are just fun, too,” he says. “I mean I’ve had a few of those and I have no problem with those. It’s like, I go to the movie, I like to have some chocolate covered peanuts (laughs), you know, but I also like a heavy movie. And there’s places for all of it.” The key, says Tim, is finding good songs no matter what the tempo. “Whether you’re doing a movie, whether you’re singing a song, whether you’re building a house, no matter what you’re doing you have to start with good material. Cause a lot of people can swing a hammer, a lot of people can sing a song and a lot of people can go show up and be in a movie, but if you’re not picking good material, if you’re not starting the project out with a great song or a great script or a great board then the end results not gonna be what you want it to be.”
