Best known for his standout lead vocals during his 12 years with the group Shenandoah—a band that scored hits with “Mama Knows,” “Next to You, Next to Me,” “Sunday in the South,” “The Church on Cumberland Road” and others—Marty Raybon sounded as good as he ever has during a high-energy set of mostly new tunes during a full-house album release party at The Rutledge in Nashville last night. His latest project, Marty Raybon, At His Best, hit the streets this week, and the CD is filled with excellent tunes. During a post-show chat in the greenroom, Marty talked about a couple of them, including “Daddy Phone,” his debut single from Best. The song takes a poignant look at the heartache when a dad is separated from his child through divorce. Marty’s been married now for 25 years, and considers himself older and wiser than when his own first marriage didn’t work out. That’s why he feels comfortable saying, “It doesn’t really matter who did what to who, who cheated, who did this or did that. Kids suffer in those situations. Did your child cheat on you? People need to find some mercy and forgiveness and learn to live together and love each other.” —David Scarlett
