Exploring Nashville

A friend and I will be spending some time in Nashville in late May. Can anyone tell me if public transportation, i.e. buses, etc. will be convenient so that we can visit in-the-city venues and get around without renting a car? Also, how far out do the buses go? For instance, would a place to stay near the airport have access to a bus going into the central area? Thanks for your help.
