Hello Nashville,

I am very seriously considering relocating to Nashville and one of my most important requirements for any city I live in is extensive public transportation. Can I get around Nashville without a car?

Thanks,

Joey in Pensacola, FL

Yes, there is public transportation in downtown Nashville - It's called Nashville MTA and you can reach them at (615) 862-5969. Most commuters travel into the downtown area on MTA buses and meet connecting buses on Deaderick Street, the location of the city's outdoor hub.

There's also a shuttle service called BusLink that serves the Green Hills-Belle Meade area - (615-862-LINK or 5465). You're connected directly to the driver - let him know what stop you want to be picked up and what stop you want to be dropped off. It's very convenient!

Here are some key facts:

• MTA provides 700,000 passenger trips a month in Davidson County.
• More than 40 MTA bus routes run through the Deaderick Street MTA hub.
• 160 MTA buses and Access Ride vans are on area roads during morning and afternoon rush hours.
• The MTA bus system is a "pulse" system; currently virtually all MTA buses meet downtown and approximately 60 percent of riders transfer to connecting buses on the mall. These are customers whose final destination is downtown or who board another bus to continue their travel.

nashville public transportation is years behind other cities
unless your lucky enough to live on a direct route from your house to your job dont bother

most cities have buses that run 3-4 times per hour up and down every main street you'll be lucky to find a bus that runs more than once an hour on a lot of main streets

they just got a train service that supposed to state of the art but in reality it looks like they got an old train from the junkyard and modified it

no service on sun and good luck after 8:00pm you proboly wont find one that runs later than that

sit down stops are limited and most of the city hasnt heard of sidewalks yet so if you dont mind standing or walking in the street that might be a problem

oh and ive yet to see a sit down covered bus stop so if its raining guess you just have to walk the streets and get wet

so while you can get around its not really a pleasurable experience

Thanks for your info on the pub transit in N'ville. It sounds like you just flat don't like it (and maybe don't like Nashville at all?).

It is important for me to have good public transportation, but I don't mind walking a bit to get to a main bus stop, if need be. Also, FYI, if you go to www.nashvillemta.org, you will discover that there is a limited "night owl" schedule of buses, that run late nights.

My intention is to live downtown and work downtown, so I may not have to worry about an extensive bus line, but we'll see. I'm going to come and spend a few days there at the end of the summer and go from there.

Thanks much

If you live and work downtown it wouldn't be bad, but I grew up in Florida, and although I LOVE nashville, it is years behind Florida in public transportation.
