On May 5th their was a Nashville MTA Public hearing at the Downtown Library about the proposed cuts in routes and services. IF the Nashville City Council passed the proposed budget cuts to MTA. In response MTA will cut the following buses: 1 Vine Hill; 2 Belmont; 8 8th Ave South; 13 Sylvan Park; 16 Madison/Old Hickory; 18 Airport/Elm Hill Pike; 30 Mc Ferrin; 31x Harpeth Valley Express; 37x Tusculum/McMurray Express; 41 Golden Valley; and 45x Oak Hill Express. In addition to cutting these routes completely Nashville MTA will eliminate weekend service and the Night Owl Service and raise the fare .25 one way. Thus the Nashville Bus Riders Union was born. Nashville citizens banned together to fight the fare hike and service cuts.

As a rider of the 96x bus to Murfreesboro, I have seen the ridership increase to the point that every bus I ride has a number of people standing. This is obviously a dangerous situation as well as a contadiction to "Relax and Ride". We now here that they will be "drastically" changing our routes and stops. If this means eliminating any of the two, I see it as a very "stupid" act in that they should be INCREASING, not DECREASING as ridership explodes. I can see fare increases with the oil situation, but to constantly change/eliminate routes is rediculous.

The budget cuts that Karl Dean have proposed reduced MTA's budget by 2.9 million dollars. 7 bus routes, weekend service and the night owl service are on the chopping block. These cuts are going to hurt the low income, the disabled and the elderly the worse. On May 17th, Saturday at the East Library at 206 Gallatin Rd there will be a foundation meeting of the Nashville Bus Riders Union. I hope to see you there to show your support. Also, if you are interested in joining email nashvillebusridersunion@gmail.com with your name and contact information.

i was wondering what happened with this, as the posts are old. I'm moving from new york city in a month, obviously sans car. i was going to try public transit as long as i could, but this is quickly seeming like it's not a viable option. any updates?
