Hi,

I am a singer and songwriter and I am going to move to Nashville in December with my demo. I have been writing songs for a year and a half and have been performing at open mics. I know a little music theory, play guitar, sing, and know a little keyboard.

I have been told by some people that it's not a good idea to move to Nashville until you are pretty well established in the city you are living in. Any thoughts on this?

Also, what would be good first steps when I first get to Nashville?

Thanks for your help.

you may have to offer to play for free (seriously) in the beginning just to get your foot in the door. Certainly don't want to be negative here, but you need to know there's a lot of work to do before securing any gigs. Look to play in venues outside of Nashville as well and just to get your name -and music- out there. Best of luck.

Find a job and a decent place to live. Then join NSAI, Nashville Songwriters Association. Start networking and playing your songs at places like the Bluebrid and Douglas Corner.

Hi!
If you're looking for a record deal, then yes, the best thing to do is come to town with some kind of traction. That would mean a solid fan base (email list/newsletter), expereince gigging (and better yet, currently gigging) and an unbelievable work ethic. You've got to out-work the other thousands of singer/songwriters coming to town ach month.

Check out NashvilleMusicPros.com, IndieConnect.org (and .net) and http://nashvillemusiciansandsingers.ning.com and start networking before you even get here!

Good luck!
